Long before YouTube was even thought of, and even before the internet began to become avilable in the home in the mid-90s, gameplay advice was limited to mainly magazines and the premium rate “tip lines” that used to be published in the back of game manuals.
In Japan they went one further introducing gameplay videos in the late 1980s, mainly of arcade games. These gameplay videos became more widely known as “Superplays”, and featured expert game players demonstrating perfect play throughs of a given game.
As fighting games became popular “Superplays” were released not only showing expert play throughs, but also combo and special-move demonstrations for the in-game characters.
The majority of these “Superplays” were published by Pony Canyon in partnership with Scitron, and could be viewed on either VHS tape or Laserdisc (LD).
I’ve been a Laserdisc owner since the mid-90s, and when I first discovered “Superplay” LDs I knew I had to see one for myself, eventually deciding to try and track down all the Neo•Geo related LDs that were published – which took quite some time as no definitive list could be found, and some of the discs are now very rare, even in Japan!
Below is the complete set of all the Neo•Geo LDs that were published including some which are not “Superplay” related, and I’ll highlight those discs accordingly.
Fatal Fury 2
Fatal Fury Special
Fatal Fury 3
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Samurai Spirits
Samurai Spirits 3
Samurai Spirits 4: Amakusa’s Revenge
The King of Fighters ’94
The King of Fighters ’95
The King of Fighters ’96
The King of Fighters ’97
The King of Fighers ’98 – this is not actually a “Superplay” but a “Drama” disc, featuring interviews with the actors who voiced Iori and Kyo for SNK. There are some gameplay clips, but again focused very much on Iori and Kyo. This was the last Pony Canyon Neo•Geo LD to be directly connected to one of SNK’s games.
Art of Fighting
Art of Fighting 2
Art of Fighting 3
World Heroes 1 & 2
World Heroes 2 Jet
World Heroes Perfect
Fighter’s History Dynamite – the only non-SNK Neo•Geo game to get a “Superplay” (FHD was made by Data East)
Neo•Geo Gals Graffiti – focuses on female characters from SNK & ADK fighters including the voice actors behind them.
Neo•Geo DJ Station Live ’99 – the final Neo•Geo LD published, this is a video of a live performance of Neo•Geo soundtrack songs, as well as performances from various voice actors.
Scitron 5th Anniversary Neo•Geo Collector’s Box – to celebrate Scitron’s 5th Anniversary of publishing videogame related content they released two box sets – one for Neo•Geo and one for Capcom. Each set was then available in either LD or VHS format. Each box set is individually numbered on the OBI and comes with both LDs/VHS tapes and CD sound tracks, a booklet and, for Neo•Geo, a replica Terry Bogard baseball cap. The video / music content of these box sets is not unique, and is the same content that can be found on the respective individual LD / VHS / CD releases.
